We continue the MIT Press "What you should know about..." series with the new "Disparity: How Inclusion Shapes Design".

"The objects and people around us affect our ability to participate in all aspects of social life. Our cities, workplaces, technology, even our interactions with each other are points of interaction for accessing the world around us. Once we encounter these points of access, we sometimes we can interact with them easily, and sometimes we can't. When interaction is difficult, many of us will try to adapt. But sometimes no amount of creativity allows us to apply the solution, because it simply does not correspond to the physical or mental capabilities of the person.

We can see many examples around us. The child climbs on the table to wash his hands in the sink. Adults are lost in the search for instructions to navigate the software when it is updated with new features. Each of us has entered into an environment of inappropriate interaction, such as ordering lunch from a menu written in an incomprehensible language. This is the power of inconsistencies. They make social life accessible to some people, but not to all.

Inconsistencies are obstacles to interacting with the world around us. And they are a side effect of the way our world is organized. Inconsistencies are the building blocks of alienation. They can be seen as small moments of annoyance when technology doesn't work the way we hope. Or make it feel like you've stumbled upon a locked door with a large "No Trespassing" sign on it. It hurts in both cases.

In this book, we`ll take a deep dive into how inclusion can be a source of innovation and growth, especially for digital technologies."
